TPAC Announces the 2012 Open Studio Tour
October 29, 2012
The Open Studio Tour, which is free to the public, draws in thousands of people year after year. Organized by the Tucson Pima Arts Council (TPAC), the Tour offers visitors an amazing opportunity to wander through artists’ studios in every quarter of our county and celebrate the rich creativity that is a hallmark of our region.
From the adobe barrios and artist warehouses of Downtown to the architect-designed homes of the Catalina foothills; from Green Valley to Marana to Oro Valley, you will be surprised at the range of talent, subjects, materials and sources of inspiration on display. You will also be amazed by the studios themselves, which give unusual insight into the artistic work process.
Have you always wanted to own an original work of art? Are you in the market for a unique piece of jewelry or handmade ceramics? Whether you know very little about art or a lot, whether your tastes run from desert landscape to formal abstraction to Japanese anime, you are certain to find something of interest. Or perhaps you want to find out more about printmaking or steel sculpture or photographic techniques. During the Tour, artists will be on hand to talk about the ways in which they approach their work—and what most inspires them.
This year too – for the first time ever – visitors will have a chance to vote for their favorite artist! The five artists to receive the most votes will be featured in a “You the Curator” Show in December (more details to follow).
If you want to view sample artworks beforehand, drop by the OST Preview Exhibit, which the Jewish Community Center Fine Art Gallery will host from Oct. 24 through Nov. 8 (3800 E. River Road; for hours, call (520) 299-3000 or visit http://www.tucsonjcc.org/arts/
To help visitors find their way during the weekend Tour, free color guides with maps, addresses and a list of participating artists will be available at select locations, including libraries and Bookman’s. Maps and artwork samples are also available online at www.TucsonPimaArtsCouncil.org.
The Open Studio Tour is made possible with the generous support of the City of Tucson, Pima County, Arizona Commission on the Arts, Sarnoff Artist Materials, Warehouse Arts Management Organization, the Loft Cinema, Tucson Jewish Community Center and Sundt Construction.
