Economic Impact of Arts and Cultural Organizations in Pima County

March 29, 2013

Downtown Tucson is the cultural hub of the region.  Downtown is home to the Arizona Opera, Arizona Theatre Company, Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Tucson Museum of Art, Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the Fox Theatre, the Rialto Theatre, Club Congress, Beowulf Theatre Company, and numerous galleries and music venues.

Investment in Downtown Tucson supports our arts and cultural institutions which in turn support investment in the region.  In 2010, Americans for the Arts conducted a study of the economic impact of non-profit arts and culture organizations and their audiences in Pima County.  There were 1,900,000 people in the audiences of the many shows and performances tracked, generating an estimated $87.7M in total economic activity.  See, http://www.tucsonpimaartscouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/AZ_PimaCounty_AEP4_FinalReport1.pdf

The Fox Theatre recently conducted its own study of its audience.  In one year (2011), The Fox attracted 61,000 audience members spending $3.4M.  See, http://www.downtowntucson.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Fox-Downtown-Econ-Impact-Final-2012.pdf

Tucson Pima Arts Council is currently mapping our cultural resources which we will link to when it is completed.  Any discussion about Downtown economic development needs to include the vibrant arts and culture community we have, and we need to talk about how our work supports and enhances these existing resources.
