Terrazzo Palooza Gives You a Chance To Own a Piece of Tucson History
September 5, 2013
Join a party in the parking lot at Access Tucson Community Media and own a piece of Tucson history at Terrazzo Palooza!
Terrazzo tiles that were laid down in 1947 for the old Downtown VFW building – which is now home to Access Tucson – were headed for the dump. Fortunately, though, they were saved, and will go on sale to the public at a free event on September 14 from 6-9pm. The 2’ x 2’ tiles (70-80 pounds each) will only be $20.
The festivities, part of 2nd Saturday, include free live music and the chance for you to appear on TV.
The building now home to Access Tucson Community Media and Tucson 12 was originally built for VFW Tucson Post 549, the largest VFW post in Arizona. This chapter was chartered as “Joe C. Salazar Post 549″ on January 3, 1921 and was only the third VFW post chartered in Arizona. Tucson Post 549 moved in to its “new” location at 124 E. Broadway on May 30th, 1948 – complete with glossy Terrazzo tiles for the flooring indoors as well as for the front sidewalk.
This beautiful building, full of memories, has housed Access Tucson Community Media and Tucson 12 since 1985. It’s been adapted for television production and distribution. The glamour of the original building lives on in the ballroom floor, dumbwaiters, and memories of fine dining, dancing – and terrazzo tiles.
Terrazzo Palooza takes place on September 14 from 6-9pm at Access Tucson, 124 E. Broadway. More information is available here.
