An entire weekend of pavement-slicing two-wheeled outdoor excitement is at hand in Downtown Tucson this Saturday, March 8th and Sunday, March 9th with The Visit Tucson Old Pueblo Grand Prix, and the Tucson Medical Center Gran FUNdo!
The Old Pueblo Grand Prix is your opportunity to come and check out a nationally-known pro cycling event, at which you can see some of the world’s best athletes within the sport competing in an incredibly fast event on a tight urban course, in a manner some refer to as the ‘F-1 of cycling’.
The start/finish line is right between the beautifully historic Pima County Courthouse dome and Jacome Plaza in front of the Main Library, with the course buzzing through a two-thirds of a mile loop right in the heart of Downtown.
The race begins Saturday at 5pm, and with the area now bustling with terrific restaurants and breweries, this could be the beginning of a beautiful evening between you and the neighborhood.
There will be a Fan Fair sponsored by Odell Brewing Company, right at Jacome Plaza, featuring a beer garden, food trucks, a BMX pump track, and two sets of bleachers with a terrific view of the racing action. BRING COWBELLS, because this race needs more!
“I was walking the course with an ex-pro cyclist the other day,” said Susan Frank, Race Director for Old Pueblo Grand Prix. “There was just this twinkle in his eye. He said, ‘This is it. This is what we live for.’” A prime spot coming early in the racing calendar ensures a robust roster of world-class and Olympic cyclists in attendance at Old Pueblo Grand Prix.
What makes this equally exciting is that the very next day, at the Gran FUNdo event, participants can then ride along with many of the pro teams committed to the race! Recommended start time Sunday is between 8:00-9:00am.
The first 100 Gran FUNdo riders that make it all the way to Turn Around Point 3 will walk away with a free souvenir T-shirt, and everyone can participate in an autograph hunt.
The person who acquires the most autographs from pro riders (stationed at various points along the path) will win a fantastic gift basket composed of a variety of excellent goodies from participating merchants at Mercado San Augustin, which serves as the start/finish line for the path that follows along the Santa Cruz River!
There’s so many ways to be a part of this great weekend, there’s no excuse not to come out! For information on registration, parking, locations, and any questions you might have, please check out the Old Pueblo Grand Prix website here.
