A veritable ocean of ink has been spilled locally on the various facets of Downtown Tucson’s economic revival, from the Modern Streetcar, to the variety of businesses, both independent and nationally-owned, that have jumped into the mix the last few years.

Having a colossal variety of brewpubs and innovative independent restaurants is fantastic, but just as important are the big businesses looking for a competitive edge, and nationally-known companies deciding that our revitalized area is where they want to put down roots and continue their ventures is very critical to the perception of our fair city.

Recognizing that Downtown Tucson is becoming a fantastic place to work, live, and play, the nation’s largest car wash company, Mister Car Wash, is moving their corporate headquarters from La Paloma Corporate Center to the former 1950s-era First Baptist Education Building at 6th Avenue and 5th Street.

The building was in a serious state of disrepair before the current redevelopment began, and even at this early point in the project, the entire corner has vastly improved. The historic brick style and basic form of the location will not change, but the entirety of the interior and surrounding structures will be completely redesigned by award-winning Tucson-based Rob Paulus Architects.

The result of this extensive project will be more than 25,000 square feet of Art Deco-inspired and contemporary office space designed to energize the staff and provide a state-of-the-art collaborative environment, along with training facilities, a workout area and showers, and a massive lounge that will extend into a shaded courtyard.

“We are thrilled to create economic opportunity in the city we’ve called home since 1998,” Mister Car Wash CEO, John Lai, said in a statment. “We have known for a while that Tucson’s recent growth has created an environment where people want to work and live, and will allow Mister Car Wash to continue to attract top talent to grow our team, while retaining our current team of experienced industry experts.”

The announcement certainly underlines the continued strength of the Downtown Tucson redevelopment, as there has been a fusillade of other stories along these lines, and the business community’s efforts to reel in other big industry fish is an ongoing priority for everyone working to make this revitalization succeed.

As for this specific project, the Mister Car Wash team has entered the location, and will be working around the renovation until its scheduled completion this fall. We will be following this story with updates which you can find right here at DowntownTucson.org.
