I’m a smoothie junkie of sorts. I also spend a lot of time Downtown. I like the smoothie because it’s a sugary liquid meal packed with nutrients and ingredients that provide energy and hydration, which are hard to come by when temperatures exceed 100 degrees for many days straight during the summer months in our desert climate. Although, I could fry an egg on the sidewalk for a quick meal when I’m on the run, I prefer the cold, creamy smoothie to the hot, slimy egg.

I’ve walked by Urban Fresh so many times during my Downtown excursions and I’m not sure why I never noticed the main attraction by way of the word “smoothies” written on the sign outside. But on this particular Monday, I’m lucky enough to notice it. I approach the counter, dehydrated and spent from walking around Downtown in the scorching summer heat.

A friendly face approaches the counter and asks, “What do you need for your day? What are you looking to get out of your food today?”

Urban Fresh offers a different hand-crafted lemonade and tea every day of the week.

The question made me do a double take, and I was inspired by the fact that this man was taking a holistic approach to food as medicine, and that he actually cared about my individual needs. I explain that I need hydration and energy, and that I want a smoothie. He tells me the “Green Berry” is the perfect smoothie for my needs and tells me not to be afraid of the avocado and spinach ingredients, because the blueberries provide the flavor and the coconut milk will provide superior hydration.

He was right, and I was impressed. At that point I had to start asking questions, only to find out I was receiving service from the owner of Urban Fresh, Chauncey Padilla, and that the day’s specials were created with the theme of Monday-detoxification in mind. Mr. Padilla went on to explain that he and his wife and co-owner, Dana Padilla custom design their daily specials, and on Mondays, people are just coming off the weekend, where they may have indulged in toxins that have them feeling sluggish at the start of the work week.

The specials change daily, based on what the family decides to create. It’s a family owned and operated business to the core. Mr. and Mrs. Padilla are there to serve during all open hours and often have their daughter, Erika helping out. Erika and her brother Gabriel, are junior-members of the Urban Fresh team, and are happy to help out mom and dad in their new restaurant.

Urban Fresh is located at 73 E. Pennington in Downtown and is open Monday-Friday from 8am to 3pm.

The Padillas took over ownership of Urban Fresh a month ago. This is their first business. They couldn’t be more pleased to serve the Downtown community with fresh vegan options created with care. The Padillas haven’t owned a restaurant before, but they come from the background of service. Mr. Padilla was a United States Air Force Aerial Gunner Instructor and special mission aviator, and Mrs. Padilla has a background in human services.

At Urban Fresh they shop and chop local when they can. They’ve been highly successful at finding fresh, organic local produce on a daily basis. Mrs. Padilla shops every morning for the fresh ingredients she’ll need throughout the day to create her specials, and everything else offered on the menu.

On detox-Monday this week, Urban Fresh offered ‘Vegetable Detox,’ made from a little bit of organic broccoli, heirloom carrots, add a little turmeric and cayenne to clean out the system and replenish at the same time. The fava bean wrap was another detox-Monday special, made from fava beans that were hand picked by Mrs. Padilla the day before at the Farmer’s Market.
