The holiday season is in full force, and you may have noticed that the stores of Downtown are decorating accordingly. Businesses all around the central Downtown area are participating in this year’s Holiday Window Display Competition, organized by the Downtown Tucson Partnership and 2nd Saturdays.

During this month’s Second Saturday, the winners will be announced at the Scott Stage and awarded prizes anyone would be pleased to find under the tree. First place will receive two round-trip tickets to anywhere in the continental U.S., Second will get $1,000 in advertising opportunities with KGUN, and third will get a $100 Downtown Tucson Gift Card, good at over seventy Downtown businesses.

“This is a great opportunity for local businesses to be involved in the holiday decoration of Downtown,” said Brandi Haga-Blackman, Director of Operations at the Downtown Tucson Partnership. “We’re really looking forward to what everyone comes up with.”

Entries in the competition are limited only by their imaginations and the seasonal theme, meaning the storefronts of Downtown will embody holiday cheer in ways as different as the businesses themselves, turning Downtown into Tucson’s destination for holiday excitement (since our weather won’t do the work for us).

The deadline for contest entries is December 11th, but walking around Downtown you’ll see plenty of businesses, many of whom have impressive window displays year-round, already getting into the holiday spirit.

From festive vintage fashion scenes in the window of Flash in the Past to a Christmas list in the window of FORS Architecture surrounded by a flurry of letters to Santa, businesses around Downtown are incorporating the themes of their business into their contest entries.

This year, the competition marks one more addition to Downtown’s draw as a destination, for Tucson as well as surrounding communities, and not just for the holidays. For now though, the competition is just focusing on what members of the community can do to help add beauty and fun to Downtown, offering a holiday event that’s earlier and longer-lasting than the fantastic but all too fleeting Downtown Parade of Lights.

With the enthusiasm businesses have shown already for the competition, it looks like we have a lot to look forward to with Downtown’s holiday transformation this year. As Downtown’s holiday spirit grows, next year is sure to be even merrier.
