Batch Whiskey & Doughnuts Debuts Grilled Cheese Varieties with New Food Menu

When you think of all your favorite foods, the ones Mama used to make, the stuff that warms the heart and feed the soul, Kade Mislinski is willing to bet that they all have something in common: they come in batches. From doughnuts to pies to sandwiches, somehow the best, most nostalgic food seems to also be the simplest to make in bulk (perhaps the result of rushed parents trying to feed several people at once). Now, Downtown Tucson is offering you the adult version of your favorite comfort foods, at Batch Whiskey and Doughnuts.
Kade, who opened the combination bar and café at the beginning of the year, is already seeing an overwhelmingly positive response to the two title offerings of the business. The improbable pairing of whiskey and doughnuts embodies the playful nature of Batch’s menu.
The liquor and the classic comfort pastry are great indicators of what’s to come. The doughnuts, made fresh daily, are the restaurant’s first project based on Kade’s interest in the flavor possibilities when you combine salty and sweet. The unusual toppings and glazes, including bacon, pink blueberry, and kid’s cereals, and the thick doughy texture complement rather than drown each other out. Though Kade encourages customers to branch out and try the two signature items together (they combine surprisingly well), there’s strong fresh Presta drip coffee for those who prefer their doughnuts with a more traditional breakfast beverage.
However, the restaurant has ambitions beyond its two title offerings. Kade says the goal is for Batch to be known for their comfort foods as a whole, a place where Tucsonans can get all their soul-soothing food needs met, whether it’s a casual breakfast to go, lunch with friends, or drinks with dinner at the end of the day. Though Batch offers one of the top whiskey selections in town, he says the idea goes beyond that. You’ll find no fancy cocktail menu here.
“We don’t want to be known as just a bar,” he says.
Their brand-new food menu includes an extensive selection of grilled cheese and snack foods, and Kade hopes to soon include quiche and bread pudding (made from yesterday’s doughnuts). Over 20 versions of grilled cheese are a focus of the menu, and Batch will celebrate the menu launch Tuesday morning and afternoon with a free tasting and showcase of their many twists on the famous sandwich, including a doughnut grilled cheese.
For those who are looking for a healthier option for breakfast or lunch, Batch will offer yogurt made by Goodness, among others. Collaboration is important to Kade. A longtime participant in the Tucson food scene (he’s the brain behind such Downtown success stories as HUB and Playground), he knows how much support there is to be given and had from other businesses in the community. With future joint ventures between Batch and other Tucson classics near on the horizon as well as its promising first couple of weeks, it’s safe to say we can expect Batch to become another iconic part of the Downtown restaurant scene.
