EventsAugust Food Bank drive at the Tucson Children's Museum The Museum will host an August food drive to benefit the Community Food Bank. Each visitor who brings 2 non-perishable items during the month of August will receive $1.00 off the regular admission price. The Community Food Bank is in need of: soup, cereal, powdered milk, fruit juice, pinto beans, macaroni & cheese, rice, peanut butter, tuna, and canned fruits and vegetables. The Tucson Children's Museum is committed to the overall education of children. Participating in a food drive provides children a hands-on opportunity to experience giving back to the community. Celebrate Tucson's 228th Birthday on Wednesday, August 20, beginning at 8:00 am, at the Pima County Courthouse located at 115 North Church Avenue. The presentation of the flags will be at 8:30 am. Flags that have flown over Tucson American, Spanish, Mexican, Confederate, and the State of Arizona will be presented on horseback in a ceremony to celebrate Tucson's 228th birthday. The Tohono O'odham and Pascua Yaqui flags will also be presented. The ceremony includes an invocation, reading of proclamations, honor guard presentation, and patriotic music. Guests are encouraged. to dress in accurate period costumes and also enjoy a piece of the Tucson birthday cake. The tradition of presenting the flags to celebrate Tucson's birthday began in 1975. Arizona Historical Society Summer Lecture Schedule All lectures take place in the Museum Auditorium, 949 E.. 2nd St. The talks begin at 7:00 p.m. Admission: $6.00 per lecture, $5.00 for AHS members, $3.00 for students with I.D. August 6, "4000 Years of Farming in the Tucson Basin" presented by Diana Hadley, Research Specialist, DRSW AZ State Museum Ms. Hadley will discuss the development of agriculture in the Tucson basin from prehistoric times to the present. August 13, "The Archaeology of the Tucson Presidio" presented by Homer Thiel, Desert Archaeology Inc. Mr. Thiel will discuss the archaeological excavations of the Presidio de San Agustín del Tucsón in downtown Tucson over the last eleven years. August 20, "Recovering the San Agustn Mission" presented by Douglas Gann, Preservation Archaeologist, Center for Desert Archaeology Mr. Gann will discuss his research into the San Agustín Mission site for the Rio Nuevo Project. Join the festival celebration with a day of live entertainment, an art show hosted by Raices Taller 222 Art Gallery, and a wide selection of great food for sale. The event is free and open to the public. A speaker series includes presentations by Wensheng Wang at 1:00 pm, "The First Chinese In Tucson." At 2:00 pm, Jan Vo Vecchio presents, "Tucson Women around the time of Arizona Statehood." At 3:00 pm, James Turner addresses the subject, "How Arizona Got Its Name." Labor Day Celebration of Tucson's History with the Historic Stone Avenue Temple Monday, September 1, from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm take a trip back in time at the Arizona Historical Society, 949 E. 2nd St. Archaeologists and researchers provide behind-the-scenes information on the exhibit: "Rio Viejo/Rio Nuevo: Uncovering Tucson's Past." See the "Exploring 1870s Tucson" exhibit. Take advantage of the Docent interpretations of hands-on museum exhibits, and play children's toys and games from Territorial times. Enjoy the music of Ted Ramirez, Tucson's Official Troubadour. "Hats Off to Arizona History" historical dress-up.
