AZ Historical society Museum Downtown

140 N. Stone Ave. 770-1473. Museum hours: Monday – Friday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission fees: children under 12 admitted free. Students 12-18 years of age, and Seniors (60 years of age), $2.00. Adults, $3.00. "History in the Heart of Tucson" is currently featured. Free parking in the Wells Fargo Bank parking garage.

Arizona Historical Society

Step back in time with the Historic Stone Avenue Temple for a special celebration of Tucson history. September 1, 2:00 to 5:00 pm at the Arizona Historical Society 949 E. Second Street.

9949 East 2nd St. 628-5774. Hours: Monday-Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission fees: children under 12 free. Students 12-18 years of age and Seniors 60 years of age, $4.00. Adults, $5.00. Admission is free on the first Saturday of every month. Museum Hours: Monday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. A variety of exhibits exploring the southwest are featured including "Rio Viejo/Rio Nuevo: Uncovering Tucson's Past." The exhibit focuses on the City of Tucson's Rio Nuevo Project. There is still time to see "Native Curiosity: Collecting Indian Arts in Territorial Arizona." The show features a display of native American baskets and textiles from 1880-1930. The exhibit closes Friday, August 29.

Arizona State Museum

Located on the UA Campus at Park Avenue and University Blvd. 626-8381. Hours: Monday-Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. Sunday, Noon to 5:00 pm. http://www.statemuseum.arizona.edu. Currently featured through September 2004, is "The Pottery Detectives: Decoding the Secrets of Southwestern Pottery." Walk through an 8' tall/10' wide pot to examine its shape, design, decoration, content residue, clay, and other features. Learn how archaeologists read clues to piece together information about the past.

Center for Creative Photography

SE corner of Park Ave. and Speedway Blvd. 621-7968. Hours: Monday - Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday, Noon to 5:00 pm. Currently showing is "Edward Weston: A Vision Conserved." Encompassing fine prints, negatives and papers, this show presents a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse of the care and preservation of Edward Weston's work. Also showing is "Margrethe Mather and Edward Weston: A Passionate Collaboration" through Sunday, October 12. The exhibition features 80 photographs drawn from more than 25 collections and illuminates the often-overlooked body of work of Margrethe Mather, and Weston's work from 1913 to 1925.

MOCA (Museum Of Contemporary Art)

191 E. Toole Ave. 624-5019. www.moca-tucson.org. Museum Hours: Tuesday to Saturday, Noon to 5:00 pm. Currently showing is "Lights-Camera-Action" a three-part summer exhibition. "Lights," curated by Elizabeth Cherry, is an installation on the theme of light. The second part of the exhibition, "Camera" opened in July and was curated by Vikki Dempsey. A reception will be held at the museum for the third and final act, "Action," which includes a performance by Joyan Saunders on Saturday, August 2. The Soon/Pronto space at MOCA exhibits work by emerging artists. "Junkspace" is currently featured and spotlights a series of photographs that map our contemporary built environment by Luke Stettner. Both exhibits are showing through Saturday, August 16.

Pima County Sports Hall of Fame

110 S. Church Ave. in La Placita Village. 514-1600. Museum Hours: Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. View a fabulous collection of sports memorabilia. Current and former Arizona greats inducted in the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame, include former UA baseball player and coach Jerry Stitt, UA men's head basketball coach Lute Olson, former track and field coach Dave Murray, Sean Elliott, Fred Enke, Jerry Kindall, and "Pop" McKale.

Sosa-Carrillo-Frémont House Museum

151 Granada Ave. at the Tucson Convention Center. Museum Hours: Wednesday to Saturday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Admission fees: children under 12 admitted free. Students 12-18 years of age, and Seniors (60 years of age), $2.00, Adults, $3.00. Currently showing is, "Soiled Doves: Women of Business in Territorial Tucson." The exhibit features images of prostitutes who "worked" in Gay Alley during territorial times, between 1891 and 1917. Gay Alley was located between Meyer and Convent, south of Camp Street, which is now Broadway. Artifacts including business licenses, health certificates, and photographs featuring women who worked in Tucson's old red light district.

Tucson Children's Museum

200 South 6th Ave. Avenida Cesar Chavez. 792-9985. http://www.tucsonchildrensmuseum.org. Museum hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday, Noon to 5:00 pm. Admission fee: $3.50 for children 2-16, $5.50 for adults, and $4.50 for seniors. "Young Americanos" is currently on display and showing Latin life in Southern Arizona by a group of wining artists through Wednesday, August 20. Classes in August include: Saturday, August 9, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, and Sunday, August 10, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm, come have your face painted as your favorite animal. Also on Saturday, August 9, from 11:00 am until Noon is the Endangered Alphabet Storytelling Hour. This session will awaken the animal lover in everyone through an interactive sing-along and puppet show. Sunday, August 10, at 1:30 pm 30 3:00pm, come to the Early Childhood Speakers Series, to find out how TV can be a learning tool with KUAT staff. Toddler Tuesdays, on Sunday Too, will be held on Sunday, August 10, from Noon to 1:00 pm for toddlers of all ages. Toddler Tuesday, August 12, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am is recommended ages 12 months to 2 1/2 years, and Toddler Tuesday, on August 26, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am is recommended ages 2 1/2 to 4 years. Saturday, August 16, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, enjoy a day of experiments with Dry Ice. Learn how to make root beer, watch a balloon inflate, and other fun. Saturday, August 23, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, come make a German cone filled with candy for your first day of school. Parents can learn how to make the most out of using television and the Internet at the Toddler Tech program on Sunday, August 24, beginning at 1:00 pm, with Amber Mathewson from the Tucson-Pima Public Library. Saturday, August 30, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, use the power of the sun to develop a photographic image. On Sunday, August 31, from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm, make a beautiful sun catcher to brighten up your room.

Tucson Museum of Art

140 N. Main Ave. 624-2333. Museum Summer Hours: Tuesday-Saturday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, Sunday, Noon to 4:00 pm. Admission Fee: Free on Sunday. General admission $5.00, Seniors (60+) $4.00, and students (13+) $2.00. Members and children under 12 are admitted free. Time is running out to see the popular Arizona Biennial Exhibition on display through August 17. This exhibition fabulously spotlights a mix of artistic styles from Arizona artists. This is a show you will not want to miss. "Thirty Years: A Western Artists of the Year Retrospective" is currently featured in the John K. Goodman Pavilion through September 14. Opening Saturday, August 9, through Sunday, August 24, is "Emerging Artists." Students in the TMA Art School's acclaimed summer program for children ages 6 to 18, exhibit selections of their summer work.Ê See sculptures, drawings, paintings, and mixed media work created by Tucson's newest talents.

UA Museum of Art

Speedway Blvd. and Park Ave. 621-7567. Museum Summer Hours: Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 3:30 pm. Sunday, Noon to 4:00 pm. Through August 24, "The Color Black: Selections from the UA Museum of Art Collection."
Through August 10, "Natural Pursuits: Selections from the UA Museum of Art Collection."
