From The Editor

he Downtown Tucsonan recently celebrated its first anniversary. I want to thank our staff and contributors for their high-quality, hard work, and extend my appreciation to the Tucson Downtown Alliance Board of Directors for supporting this new venture and allowing it to develop. It’s been a great vehicle to get more information out about what’s happening Downtown, and it’s been a great way for the TDA to develop relationships both within and outside the Downtown area. It has also been a lot of fun for us.

While the current edition is a little smaller than recent issues (due mainly to Tucson’s annual summer slowdown, which applies to advertising), I hope you agree that the Downtown Tucsonan has gotten a little more interesting and visually appealing with each month’s publication. Dave Olsen and the rest of our staff and I enjoy the monthly challenge of trying new things and finding better ways of delivering quality information.

As of July 1, the Tucson Downtown Alliance has another five-year term as the contractor for the Downtown Business Improvement District, and we look forward to bringing new members into the BID in the near future. We’ve created It’s Happening Downtown, Inc. to be a vehicle for marketing Downtown and promoting special events. We have reason for great optimism about our organization’s future capacity to serve the Downtown community.

Downtown will soon see a major new parking facility, a restored historic depot, new housing at multiple sites, a redeveloped Thrifty Block, a reopened Fox Theatre, history restored at the Convento and Presidio, an improved link to 4th Avenue, and a new signage system for helping people get to their Downtown Destinations.

Much is happening, and the future is bright!

Donovan Durband
Executive Director, Tucson Downtown Alliance
President, It’s Happening Downtown, Inc.
