SWING DING AMIGOS
“THE MAGNOLIA CHRONICLES” and
“KINGS OF CULO”
A photo of three Hispanic guys posing in cowboy hats, matching shirts while holding an accordion and an acoustic guitar comprises the pink-colored album art of Kings Of Culo. Being that as it may, don’t judge a book by its cover and presume Swing Ding Amigos a cheesy lounge act. Far from that, the Amigos play fast and furious hardcore/punk - fully amped up and nary a ballad in sight. Their astute sense of humor makes it more fun to listen to than similar bands - such as the joyless Minor Threat. Of the two albums, Chronicles is more direct, with 22 songs flying by in a mere 24 minutes. Kings Of Culo is more measured with songs that often branch out into interesting directions midway through before returning back to their breakneck pace. An enjoyable and creative blast of hardcore.

Tom Walbank and The Ambassadors
“Mudhook Vol. II”
The latest from downtown Tucson’s most adored blues trio, released by Rock n Roll Purgatory, features Mike Bagesse on guitar and baritone, Dimitri Manos on drums, and Walbank on slide, harp and vocals. Mudhook II is comprised entirely of original tracks, all of which veritably tremble with intention, ardor, Walbank’s thunderous vocals and the band’s expert delivery. The songs (most notably, perhaps, is the explosive Goin’ Back to the Country), in addition to the band’s mesmerizing, foot-stomping performances, make it clear that Walbank has reached and then surpassed that foundational line in his artistry, beyond which there can be no goin’ back.

THE DETERMINED LUDDITES
“STRING THEORY”
Named after Ned Ludd, the prophetic Englishman who smashed machines during the Industrial Revolution (seeing them as a threat to the workers’ jobs), it comes as no surprise that the Luddites’ musically conjure up the simple, rural times of years past. Four acoustic stringed instruments put the music firmly in the folk/country/bluegrass camps. Drawing from these genres allows for a pleasantly wide variety of tempos and moods. The fact that about half the album is made up of instrumental numbers allows the intricate musicianship to shine through. Though the vocals are the weakest point - they don’t fully complement the music - overall it’s finger pickin’ good.

demon city wreckers
“inner demons”
A perfect, hard-rockin’, throat rippin’, stompin’ synthesis of psychobilly and the Misfits. It’s got standup bass, distorted power chords, whoa-ohs and lyrics about demons, death, zombies, fighting and the like. Punk rock insanity! It has good ole Jericho whacking the tubs and the artiste Ed on the gitfiddle. Excellent release, though I am very sad to report the recent passing of singer Jason Mashburn - one of the coolest guys on the local scene ever.

LOVEMOUND
“BLACKBIRD”
Love Mound bears a passing resemblance to Maryland outfit Clutch with their brand of heavy yet groovy rock. With most of the songs clocking in at 2-3 minutes, LM is smart enough to keep things moving along and doesn’t exhaust a supply of big riffs. Guitarist/singer/songwriter Mike Mihina creates a number of diverse sounds and textures throughout the album. To keep things interesting, Mihina’s riffs and solos are ably supported by a tight rhythm section. These hard rockin’ tunes should have even the most rigid neck nodding, if not banging, the attached head.

george squier orchestra
“george”
This release consists of pure great garage rock and inhabits the area where glorious ineptitude meets unbridled creativity. These guys and two gals crank out a fun brand of noise that’s so cool they could be from Cleveland in the 70s. If you know anything at all, that’s high praise. Sorta like Pere Ubu meets the B-52s. No overplaying and great ideas comprise a bunch of goofy songs. The keyboardist is a whiz, but he doesn’t let that get in the way. All their hits are here, Clara Rockmore, Rock Jubilee, and the song about the cockroach. For me, this is easily the release of the year. Go get it and take home as much fun as you can stand. Really.
