“Amuletos Through the Frontera” Exhibit Reception
May 10 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm| Free
Amuletos Through the Frontera, a project made possible through a Confluencenter for Creative Inquiry fellowship, attempts to capture the experiences of migrants crossing the Arizona-Mexico border and their relationships with the objects they sacredly carry on their journeys.
These stories are narrated textually by Manuel Martín Barros and visually by Joaquin Perez-Blanes, Ph.D. students in Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Arizona. Perez-Blanes’ photographs capture either the hands of the migrant holding their sacred object, or a close up of the object being held by the migrant in the background. As the lens focuses on the amulet, the migrant’s facial features remain unclear. While the migrants’ identities remain anonymous, an examination of objects they carried for good luck are exhibited to build better understandings of how migrants maintained hope during their crossings.
