Artifact Dance Project opens the season with an innovative and unique adaption of George Orwell’s famous short novel, Animal Farm. Performed inside MOCA (Tucson’s Museum of Contemporary Art), Animal Farm is an art installation of movement and music portraying one of society’s most famous and controversial narratives. Musician and art historian Kevin Justus adapts the story especially for dance, working alongside choreographer and Artistic Director, Ashley Bowman. A fusion of ballet and modern mixed with animalistic qualities, the movement, performed by ten professional dancers, portrays the distinctive characters in the story. The performance takes place inside a set piece – a 30’x20’ box filled with dirt, mimicking a pig pen – with the audience seated in the round. Lighting by Daniel Kersh will emphasize the dark and dramatic nature of the story. The powerful voice of mezzo-soprano Korby Myrick along with the celebrated Tucson Girls Chorus, directed by Marcela Molina, will sing works by composers from early Renaissance to modern day. Pianist Mary Turcotte will play selections from composers including Johann Sebastian Bach, joined by cello and violin. Artifact Dance Project’s premiere of Animal Farm will be unlike any version of the story yet produced. $27 reserved seating
