From Shaman to Surgeon Exhibit: Military Doctors and Early Medicine in the Southwest, 1776-1916

From Shaman to Surgeon, Military Doctors and Early Medicine in the Southwest, 1776-1916 runs from October 10th thought May 1 at the Presidio San Agustín del Tucson Museum (Presidio Museum). The opening will coincide with the Presidio Museum’s first Living History Days of the year. An opening reception with the exhibit curators will also be held at 11 am that day.
The exhibit explores the details of 18th and 19th century Army Medicine and also early civilian medical practitioners in Southern Arizona and the Southwest. The 18th century segment includes medicinal treatments available to the residents of the Tucson Presidio, including curandera and native treatments. The exhibit will combine photographic-text panels with artifacts and reproductions, as well as an exterior exhibit of medicinal plants. The exhibit is included in the $3 admission to the Presidio Museum which is open Wednesdays through Sundays from 10 am – 4 pm.
