Artist’s Statement: The work I engage in is intended to communicate and spark discussion. It is equally entrenched in folk and modern traditions. It is also intuitive and personally therapeutic. By utilizing common, traditional materials my own voice can be more direct, less hog-tied by the lariat of Art History. Fabric is a substance that touches our bodies every hour of the day and through which we see and experience the world. It protects us, keeps us warm. Because of this intimacy, fabric is one of the most visually evocative artistic materials. It is a direct link to the subconscious and subliminal.
By employing a popular craft, quilting also provides access to the imagery of an all-American utopia. This allows a pop sensibility to take center stage. The quilts become a collage of contemporary domesticity and modern culture. They also become a mirror I can brandish to reflect society back to itself.
