Show & Tell: Augmenting the Paris Experience
February 11, 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm| Free
Augmented Reality is a relatively new technology that is changing the way we interpret our surroundings. Through specialized software and mobile devices, we are now able to digitally tag the world, allowing others to see our virtual contributions that detail the Earth’s places and spaces.
This presentation will look at how augmented reality technology and digital video were utilized in a short term study abroad experience in Paris, France by the UA class, “When African Americans Came to Paris.”
The course, designed by Africana Studies Assistant Professor Dr. Bryan Carter, explores the fascinating history of African American expatriates in Paris – from artists and musicians to writers, entrepreneurs and statesmen. While in Paris, Carter’s students worked on a collaborative video documenting the experience as well as creating and implementing an Augmented Reality Project with an African American tour company, Walking the Spirit Tours. The augmented reality project covered ten important points of interest along Walking the Spirit’s tour route.
During this Show & Tell presentation, Dr. Carter and several of his students will screen the aforementioned collaborative video documenting the Paris excursion, will describe implementing the augmented reality technology, as well as share the study abroad experience as a whole – the highs and the lows.
Show & Tell is presented by the UA Confluencenter for Creative Inquiry, whose mission is to create boundless possibilities for excellence through innovation, collaboration and community engagement at the University of Arizona and beyond.
