STEEP CANYON RANGERS
September 19, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 11:55 pm| $18.00
The Steep Canyon Rangers started as a group of friends playing music together for fun, but after more than a dozen years together, they have evolved into one of the most successful and recognizable bluegrass bands today. Their performance credits include television shows Austin City Limits, The Late Show with David Letterman, Today Show and Bluegrass Underground; radio shows “A Prairie Home Companion”, “The Grand Ole Opry” and “Mountain Stage”; and celebrity events like the Neil Young Bridge School Benefit. Grammy and IBMA Award-winning Steep Canyon Rangers are Graham Sharp (banjo), Woody Platt (guitar), Charles Humphrey (bass), Mike Guggino (mandolin), Nicky Sanders (fiddle) and Mike Ashworth (drums).
The Steep Canyon Rangers play progressive bluegrass music firmly rooted in tradition, with smart, original songs. Seasoned and dynamic professionals, they have developed a loyal and passionate audience with their instrumental dexterity, tight vocals and high energy shows. Fiddler Nicky Sanders has been known to bring the audience to their feet multiple times in a night; in fact, the band’s energy and enthusiasm makes it hard to sit still during their show. They perform at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to stand-up rock clubs; jam band festivals to traditional bluegrass festivals, ever expanding their influence beyond the typical bluegrass music audience, including performing “The Star Spangled Banner” at major sporting events.
It’s hard to talk about the Steep Canyon Rangers without mentioning Steve Martin. After meeting at a party and clicking immediately, Martin invited the band to tour and record with him. 2011’s collaboration Rare Bird Alert was nominated for a Grammy, and later that year they won IBMA’s Entertainer of the Year Award. They have toured together part of every year since, as Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, sometimes with special guest Edie Brickell. What has emerged is a real collaboration of seven consummate musicians—creating music they are passionate about and blending it with humor to form a sophisticated show. Along the way, legions of new fans have been exposed to the bluegrass genre. In 2014 Martin and the Rangers, with Edie Brickell, released the CD/DVD Live, from a concert filmed at the Fox Theater in Riverside, CA for a PBS Special.
In 2015 the Steep Canyon Rangers partnered with Oskar Blues Brewery and the CAN’d Aid Foundation and with 7Bar Aviation, a medical transport company, and their related hospital foundations, organizations that share the band’s commitment to giving back. The Steep Canyon Rangers also host their own annual festival, Mountain Song, in Brevard, NC in the fall, benefiting the local Boys and Girls Club.
A new studio record, produced by legendary Jerry Douglas, at Echo Mountain Recording in Asheville, NC, comes out in August 2015 on Rounder Records with a dozen new songs penned by Graham Sharp, Charles R. Humphrey, Mike Guggino and Woody Platt.
