Open Houses Set for Modern Streetcar Construction

March 2, 2012

Construction is set to start on the 3.9-mile Modern Streetcar that will link the University of Arizona Medical Center, Main Gate Square, 4th Avenue, Downtown and the Mercado District of Menlo Park.

The public can get a close look at what this streetcar construction will entail at a series of three pre-construction open houses on March 6, 7 and 8.

The public is invited to stop by any one of these open houses to meet the project team, learn about construction and understand the benefits of the Tucson Modern Streetcar project.

Each two-hour open house will have the same format, information and displays:  a short presentation given about 15 minutes after the doors open with project team members on hand to provide information on the work schedule, traffic control, utility upgrades, access and parking information, and more.

If the presentation is missed, there are project displays, plan sets, and project team members available to the public.

“We anticipate that there will be multiple crews working on this project in a couple of weeks,” according to Jesse Gutierrez, construction manager for the Modern Streetcar Project.  “These open houses are a great way to provide the community with construction information so they understand how it may impact their day to day schedule.”

The City of Tucson has announced Old Pueblo Trackworks as the official low bid contractor to construct the Tucson Modern Streetcar’s rails, stops, and utilities. Officially naming the project contractor ends the selection review and kicks off the start of a fast-paced construction schedule for one of our region’s largest transit projects to-date.

As construction begins, the Tucson Modern Streetcar project team is committed to keeping the public, business community and visitors informed. Signing up for email blasts, visiting project Facebook and Twitter pages and calling the info line are the best ways to learn about access and parking information. Visit here for more info.

Specific information about the upcoming pre-construction open houses is available here.
