Food Desert Mapping Tool

April 30, 2013

The US Department of Agriculture has a cool mapping tool that shows whether your location is considered a “food desert.”  Food deserts are defined as areas with low income and low access to supermarkets.

Part of downtown Tucson is classified as a food desert by USDA definitions. USDA tract number 04019000100, which includes much of downtown including the Congress Street Entertainment District, is considered a food desert because “[there are] 67.8% of the 366 total households without vehicles that are more than 1/2 mile from a supermarket.”
