Join a Benefit Concert for Fire-Damaged St. Demetrios Church
September 25, 2013
You can help rebuild the home of one of Tucson’s most beloved events, just by attending a great concert. A fire benefit concert for St. Demetrios Church will be held at the Tucson Fox Theatre on Saturday, September 28th. St. Demetrios is known for its popular Tucson Greek Festival that offers delicious Greek cuisine, entertainment, dancing, games for the kids, and a host of other activities held annually at their Hellenic Community Center.
Due to a devastating fire in May, the 2013 Tucson Greek Festival has been cancelled and the church remains closed. However, the church planned th9is concert for the usual week of the Tucson Greek Festival in an effort to raise money and to bring back the festival. The need for community support is critical to help St. Demetrios and the Tucson Greek Festival get back on their feet.
The church’s leader, Father Earl Cantos, along with his brother Bill Cantos, a world-class internationally known pianist/vocalist who lives in Los Angeles, have planned a rare and wonderful evening of music for Tucsonans to enjoy.
Bill Cantos has composed for and recorded with many legendary artists. He’s toured with Phil Collins, Herb Alpert & Lani Hall, Burt Bacharach and Dori Caymmi. Alan & Marilyn Bergman say “he plays, sings, and writes – all with wit and style”. Cantos will perform with his wife Mari Falcone, a pianist who also composes and plays with a unique mixture of pop, classical, and jazz. In addition to her solo recordings, she has served as musical director and conductor for a wide array of performers including Donna Summer, Amy Grant, Vikki Carr, and Debby Boone.
The popular Tucson Jazz Institute Ellington Big Band, directed by Doug Tidaback will also take the stage. This high school performing group recently returned from New York City where they were awarded the top prize at the Jazz at Lincoln Center – 18th Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Competition. They will feature the music of Basie, Ellington, Kenton, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong and more.
Also performing at the Fire Benefit Concert for St. Demetrios will be The Jim Howell Band. Howell is a lifelong member of St. Demetrios and an active Tucson musician.
The Fire Benefit Concert for St. Demetrios will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at the Fox Tucson Theatre. Doors open at 6 pm. For more information, call (520) 888-0505.
