Big Kahuna Birthday Bash Celebrates Sun Link’s One Year Anniversary
July 22, 2015
The Sun Link Streetcar will be celebrating its first year of service on July 25th, and you’re invited to celebrate all along the tracks. Enjoy dunk tanks, live music, and good times at businesses around Main Gate Square, 4th Avenue, Downtown Tucson, and Mercado San Agustin at the Big Kahuna Birthday Bash, a free family-friendly tropical party in the heart of the city.
Downtown, 4th Avenue, Main Gate, and Mercado businesses will be honoring the one-year anniversary with $1, $10, or 10% off deals. Also be on the lookout for special tropical drink offers, party favors, and themed music throughout the area.
In Main Gate Square, Pasco will host a pig roast luau with cocktails, hula dancers, games, and a costume party from 4-10 pm. 4th Ave will have free live music in three locations and a historic transportation display will be at Spencer Park. In Downtown, Hotel Congress will host a Wet Hot American Block Party, featuring a water slide, dunk tank, and water balloon toss. At the Mercado, enjoy a Mariachi Breakfast from 9-11, DJ from 12-3, and Hey Bucko from 6-9. Dozens of businesses will join the fun with music, comedy, and more. “I can’t believe it has almost been a year of the Tucson Modern Streetcar!” said Mia Schnaible, Director of Marketing and Development at the Arizona International Film Festival. “It’s a great way to show off what Tucson has to offer. I love taking the Tucson Modern Streetcar Downtown to have fun!”
Take advantage of free streetcar rides all day thanks to sponsors Friends of the Tucson Streetcar, Tucson Medical Center, and Tucson Electric Power. Additionally, KXCI will present the latest in the Sun Link Summer in the City concert series on the streetcar, brought to you by The Desert Diamond Casino. This week’s installment, featuring Crystal Stark, will take place in one specially marked streetcar from 7-9 p.m. Riders can board at Mercado san Agustin or any stop along the route.
Richard Fifer, General Manager & Owner of Gentle Ben’s, who has been in business in the Main Gate Square area since 1971, said, “I was one of the skeptics of the streetcar because I was afraid it would take business away. But I was pleasantly surprised that it has done the exact opposite. We have seen the biggest boost on the weekends and have a more diverse clientele. Happy birthday, Sun Link!”
Merchant discounts and restaurant specials will be available all day in many locations throughout the four districts, and all streetcar rides on Saturday will be free all day on Saturday, July 25th. Bring your own or buy a Summer in the City discount card for even more deals. Most special events start in the evening. Visit TucsonSummer.com for more information.
