Cinema La Placita: Committed to Classics In A Brand-New Home

When one thinks of Downtown Tucson, the beauty and timelessness of the old Pima County Courthouse and its strikingly colorful dome quickly come to mind. In an era in which we are simultaneously reinventing our historic urban core with reverence for the past and an eye towards the future, it is wonderful that the courtyard at this beloved landmark will be the new home for a different tradition: Cinema La Placita, now entering its 17th year of screening beloved Hollywood classic films outdoors for a devoted Downtown audience.
The first show at the brand-new venue will be a screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s masterful To Catch A Thief (starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly) on June 9th. “We’re super excited to be moving to such a historic location in Downtown Tucson,” said Erika O’Dowd, founder and director of Cinema La Placita, who has run CLP’s screenings since their inception as a labor of love.
The location really is the only thing she is intent on changing. “We’re going to keep it $3, because we want it to remain accessible, “ said O’Dowd. As before, the screenings at the Courthouse will remain quite affordable and also double as an entire night out, given the planned presence of a variety of food trucks. Of course… one key aspect to that $3 admission price remains absolutely unchanged. It still includes free popcorn. “It’s not a movie without popcorn!” exclaimed O’Dowd. We completely agree with that assessment.
As mentioned above, the first screening in the new Courthouse location will be on Thursday, June 9th with To Catch A Thief, but if you’re feeling nostalgic, you can catch their final show in the old digs at La Placita with the hilarious Christopher Guest mockumentary Best In Show on Thursday, May 26th. As always, showtime is 7:30pm.
As lifelong Tucsonans know, one of the best ways you can enjoy summertime life here in the Old Pueblo is to get outside once the temperatures break right around dusk. See you at the show!
