The Surface Mining & Technology Division will create more than 750 jobs in the region over the next five years — bringing total Caterpillar employment to about 1,000 — and have an estimated economic impact of $600 million (Photo/DTP Dec 2018. Caption and Rendering/Rio Nuevo).

Under Construction:

Caterpillar announced Tucson as the new centralized hub for the Surface Mining & Technology Division in 2016 and accepted Rio Nuevo’s offer to build a new building for its headquarters and lease it back to Caterpillar for a 25 year term. Located on the west side of Interstate 10, adjacent to Tucson’s origins, Caterpillar’s new 150,000-square-foot building will house approximately 750-1,000 company engineers, product development and support positions working on the next generation of mining equipment, vehicles, and technology. The building itself will be able to accommodate up to 700 or more employees.

The design team of SmithGroupJJR and WSM Architects revealed the renderings at a neighborhood meeting on August 19 (click on picture above). Tucson-based Sundt Construction Inc. will be the general contractor of the new 3-story building. It will include 500 parking spaces on a two level garage, one level being below ground, a public plaza, and bicycle parking.

Existing landfill excavation and remediation (approximately 16 acres), approved by the City Council, is complete. Construction is expected to be completed by early March according to an update by architect Swaim and Associates at the February Rio Nuevo Board meeting. According to Fletcher McCusker, Chair of the Rio Nuevo Board, 96% of Caterpillar’s Illinois operation staff chose to relocate to the new Tucson headquarters. 395 employees currently in Tucson at two temporary Downtown locations (One S Church) will relocate in the month of March and will be followed gradually by other Caterpillar employees.
