When bids came in low to build the a new Pima County courthouse in 1928, the Board of Supervisors used the extra money to order tile for the 100-foot-tall dome (Photo/DTP).

Under Construction:

Pima County is continuing to renovate the historic former courthouse that will become a Southern Arizona tourism center in the heart of Downtown. The space will house a regional visitor center anchored by Visit Tucson, Pima County Attractions and Tourism and the UA Gem and Mineral Museum. The former courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The exterior of the courthouse building was repainted to match the original color.

Exterior rehabilitation is complete as of September 2017, according to Poster Frost Mirto(architect). Visit Tucson is the first of the three confirmed tenants to move into the space. Pima Attractions and Tourism and the UA Gem and Mineral Museum are expected to move in within the next year. There is 4,500 sqft of additional space that the County is being selective on who the tenant will be; the tenant will most likely be congruent with the other tourism sector tenants.

According to Visit Tucson’s January Partner Newsletter: “We are excited to announce that our Tucson Visitor Center is relocating on Saturday, January 18 [2020] from our shared facility with the University of Arizona to the Historic Pima County Courthouse at 115 N. Church Ave. In partnership with Pima County, the new Southern Arizona Heritage & Visitor Center will include a topographic map, diorama of the Sonoran Desert, gift shop, and exhibits featuring our region’s nature, culture, food, history, water, recreation, and innovation.”
