An Evening with Luis Alberto Urrea

October 18, 2018 @ 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm

| $35 - $50

Event Navigation

Luis Alberto Urrea, critically acclaimed author of The Devil’s Highway and sixteen other books will take the podium with Arizona Star columnist and La Estrella de Tucson editor, Ernesto Portillo, Jr. on October 18, 2018 to help raise funds for No More Deaths.  No More Deaths is a humanitarian aid organization whose mission is to end death and suffering in the US-MX borderlands.  Urrea is a favorite son of Tucson and is wildly popular at the annual Tucson Festival of Books.  Born in Tijuana to a Mexican father and an American mother, Urrea’s writings bring to light his cross-cultural experience.  A recipient of many awards for his fiction, poetry and nonfiction, Urrea was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for The Devil’s Highway, his non-fiction account of 26 Mexican immigrants lost in the desert.  The story told in this book resonates with the work of No More Deaths in the West desert.  Urrea, known as a cross-border writer, says he is “more interested in bridges not borders”.   The evening promises to be a lively one!  A reception with the author begins at 5:30 and the program at 7:00 pm at the YWCA, 525 N Bonita Ave, Tucson 85745. Tickets go on sale September 4, 2018 at noon.  Ticket prices are $35 for the event only and $50 for the reception and event.
