It was thirty years ago that The Forbidden Pigs rode into town to play their first show in Tucson at the infamous El Casino Ballroom. The band featured Billy Bacon on vocals and bass plus Mike Hebert on vocals and guitar. That night the trio would pack the dance floor with their infectious blend of Doug Sahm inspired Tex-Mex, blues, honkytonk and rockabilly. The crowd was so enamored with the high energy and raucous performance that it only took the one night to solidify Tucson’s love for this rockin’ little trio from San Diego. Billy Bacon and the boys would return to play two more shows for KXCI’s House Rockin’ Series at El Casino. Then over the next twenty-five years they would visit Tucson numerous times to headline performance venues all over town including the Rialto Theatre, Club Congress, Mudbugs, and Vaudeville.

Billy Bacon would go on to have a notable career as one of the most entertaining performers on the club circuit both here in the US and in Europe. But he is also known as a wonderful singer and songwriter. His hero Doug Sahm even covered his original composition “Una Mas Cerveza” with his band the Texas Tornados for their “Best Of” release. Billy Bacon has recorded 10 albums with such illustrious guests as Joe Walsh, Dave Alvin, Chris Gaffney, Evan Johns and Candye Kane. In 2016, he released his first CD in over 12 years titled High, Wide & Handsome. Recorded and Produced at his home studio, it features ten new originals that showcase his immense talent in which he plays all instruments on most tracks including bass, guitar, mandolin, accordion, harmonica, violin and drums. The song selection is what folks have come to love and expect: rocking Americana, Tex-Mex, honkytonk and sugar sweet pop ballads. There is even a spaghetti western themed instrumental which happens to be the title track High, Wide & Handsome.

Mike Hebert played with the Forbidden Pigs for their formative years including all the El Casino Ballroom shows. Mike’s love of Tucson made him move here and start his own prosperous career which over the years has seen him create the Kings of Pleasure, perform with Phoenix Arizona’s Hoodoo Kings and most recently The Mike Hebert Prison Band. Mike is a gifted guitar player who has been inducted into the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame. He is very excited to be back playing with Billy Bacon for this special 30-year anniversary of their first Tucson concert, and as they say the rest is history.

Opening the show will be Americana artist Mark Insley. Known for his brilliant songwriting, he penned three wonderful albums during the period of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. At that time, he held down a weekly show at Vaudeville where he also featured such national artists as Albert Lee, Rosie Flores, Chris Gaffeny and Billy Joe Shaver. Insley is back performing after staying out of the spotlight for the past few years, and he now relishes the chance to be heard again. We for one welcome him back with open arms, and joyful ears.
