Conversations with Painting: New Work by Lauren E. Harvey

May 1 - May 31

| Free

Event Navigation

The paintings of Lauren E. Harvey will be on the gallery walls of the Joel D. Valdez Main Library from May 1-31 during regular library hours.

Artist Statement:

My origins and those of my paintings lie with the abstract expressionists. Museum collections, extensive reading, and course work guide my painting practice. The Drawing Studio in Tucson has provided invaluable instruction and I have a studio practice in my home.

I paint abstracts of my own imagination inspired by the conversations I have with the paintings. Painting challenges my ability to see, and to differentiate between crafting image and discovering the essence of a work. I feel successful when the space between viewer and painting narrows, opening a door to curiosity and exploration.

My work is in acrylic paint on canvas and paper. I use a variety of techniques from gestural painting to pours, drips, drops, splashes, and most recently bubbles. I sometimes spray my work with a garden hose to remove paint, and then layer once again. My edges are soft and hard playing forms against each other, and always I strive for compositional quality, finding layers and light and adding depth to my work.
