Embodying Soundscapes: Explorations in Palestinian Hip-Hop

May 4 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

| Free

In this presentation, which fuses lecture and discussion with music sampling, UA Confluencenter Graduate Fellow and doctoral student of gender and women’s studies Alex Karaman explores Palestinian hip-hop culture, starting from the question: How do we embody the music we listen to? Drawing from research in Israel-Palestine over the past three years, this event reflects on beats and rhythms, urban geography, dance, and gender and sexuality, to craft an account of hip-hop culture that goes beyond lyrical analysis, and into the realm of affect and embodiment. As a group, we will explore the ways in which our consumption of music is not only a matter of thought, but ultimately of feeling and desire. Throughout the event, we will listen to a range of songs from the Palestinian hip-hop scene. Free.
