The “Flame” and Tom Philabaum

Tucson, Ariz—The flame in the hot shop at Philabaum Glass Studio has burned brightly for over 40 years.  In a career that has spanned the decades, glass artist Tom Philabaum is truly one of Tucson’s treasures. His distinctive glass art appears in collections and commercial installations all over the world. In Tucson, his art can be seen at the airport, UA and the Pima County Administration building as well as numerous private collections.

With a recent diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease, Philabaum has decided that he will turn off the flame of his glass furnace for the last time at the end of April. He will continue to paint and fuse glass in the studio and the Gallery will remain open indefinitely, featuring his work and that of other outstanding glass artists from all over the US.

“The Flame”, a comprehensive show celebrating almost five decades of Philabaum’s work, will open at the gallery on Saturday, February 3rd   with an opening reception from 5-8pm.  At 5pm, Tom will give a talk on his career, followed by a video presentation and reception.   (A limited number of seats will be available at the studio but he will repeat the presentation again at the Tucson Museum of Art on March 31st. For details visit  https://tucsonmuseumofart.org/event/leadership-circle-lecture-series-the-flame-tom-philabaum/ )

During the month of February, a percentage of sales of Philabaum’s work will be donated to the PWR!  a research-based Tucson non-profit gym, dedicated to slowing the effects of Parkinson’s Disease. For more information on PWR! visit http://www.pwr4life.org/about/
