George Strasburger: “States of Men”

July 6 - July 29

| Free

The paintings of George Strasburger will be displayed at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library during regular library hours from July 1-29, 2017. A closing reception will be held on Sunday, July 23, from 3-5 pm, in the library’s Children’s Meeting Room.

Artist Statement: I painted these during the last 2 years. It is easier for me to comment on these paintings now, after they’re completed, than it is during the process of creating them. I can see now that I’m illustrating simple relationships and interactions between men. More specifically, these circumstances are intentionally vague and open ended. The details are minimal, but sufficient to supply some narrative if the viewer chooses to note them.

The characters are generally men. Some of the themes are autobiographical. (I am in a few of the paintings.) The scenes may reflect scenarios that are on my mind. Older and younger men are juxtaposed, mimicking my life and experiences. Some men are portrayed as possibly heroic. Some scenes play on biblical references. Common to them all is that they are portraits of men “at life”; mundane and profound.
