Hispanic Heritage Exhibit Celebrating Father Kino

The Joel D Valdez Main Library in downtown Tucson is honoring National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15) with a special exhibit commemorating Jesuit astronomer, missionary, explorer, rancher, architect, cartographer, and evangelizer of the southern Arizona and northern Mexico territory known as the Pimería Alta — Padre Eusebio Francisco Kino, S.J.

The Patronato de Kino de Tucson is coordinating this special display with the Pima County Public Library September 1 – October 31, 2016. The exhibit will include books about Kino’s legacy from the library’s Cele Peterson Arizona Collection, as well as a painting by Luis Gustavo Mena remembering the heart of Kino agonizing over deaths in the desert and the 45 children who lost their lives in Hermosillo, Sonora in a disastrous fire of their Child Care Center in 2011. Mineral rocks called Kinoite will also be displayed. They were named in honor of Fr. Kino and were donated by internationally renowned mineralogist Joe Ruiz of Mammoth, Arizona. Other artifacts from the Tohono O’odham and Yaqui basket collection of Manuel Velez and the Tumacacori Museumin cooperation with the National Park Service will be on display. Additional paintings, informational materials, special colonial artifacts from the 17th Century, photographs, and documents will also be on exhibition. The Kino Art Collection will be unveiled at the International Celebrity Golf Tournament on September 7 at the Casino Del Sol. For more information, please call 520-999-7898.

The Main Library will host a Closing Reception, October 15, 2016, 2-4 pm. Jane Candia Coleman, a local poet and author of The White Dove, will have a bilingual reading of a selection of her poems.
