The Presidio’s Living History program brings life inside the walls of the Presidio.  Volunteer re-enactors provide a glimpse of what life truly was like back when the Santa Cruz river flowed, a myriad of cultures were impacting each other, and the Old Pueblo was just beginning.

Visitors to the Presidio San Agustín see soldiers at drill, blacksmiths, candle-makers, merchants and weavers.  These volunteers interact with the public to demonstrate and teach about the challenges of daily life when there were no cell phones and no running water.

Each Living History Day has a theme!  Make sure to return several times throughout the season to experience your favorite themes:

Nov. 10 from 10 am – 3 pm 
Veteran’s Day: Celebrating the history of Arizona’s Military
Various representations of the military that have served in Arizona from the time of New Spain to becoming a US state.
 
Dec 7 and 8: Luminaria Nights at the Presidio
Friday, Dec. 7 from 4 pm – 7:30 
Docent-led night tours of the Presidio by Luminaria light, we will also be giving out cookies and hot chocolate.
 
Sat, Dec. 8 from 4 pm – 7:30 pm
Presidio re-enactors will present nighttime activities and musket demonstrations. Carrillo School will present Las Posadas. Hot tamales will be for sale. Children will enjoy Old World craft activities.
 
Jan. 12 from 10 am – 3 pm
Blacksmiths and the Trades of the Presidio
Learn about the various trades at the Presidio that kept the fort running
 
Feb. 9 from 10 am – 3 pm 
Statehood Celebration
Celebrating Arizona’s journey from being a territory of New Spain to the 48th US state.
 
March 9 from 10 am – 3 pm
Columbian Exchange: Old and New World Foods
A focus on gardening and the foods that were being grown by the native people when the Spanish arrived and the foods the Spanish introduced to the area
 
April 13 from 10 am – 3 pm
Fiesta de los Gentes: Celebrating the Cultures of Tucson
Celebrating the different cultures that have helped form Tucson into the city it is today.

In addition to these themed activities, regular opportunities for visitors include tastings of hand-made tortillas made onsite on the museum’s comal and fresh-made bread baked in our horno outdoor oven.  Interactive demonstrations of children’s games and weaving are always popular with visitors.  They also enjoy seeing our soldiers practice their drills and the hourly firing of a four-pound bronze cannon, a replica of cannons used at the Presidio in the late 1700s. Other interactive opportunities allow visitors to pump the bellows of the blacksmith’s forge and learn how the soldiers fire their muskets. For more information about the Living History Days, see our YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0Qi3uo9dX-U9JFgaL-brvg.
