Panel Discussion: Prison Reform in Arizona
December 18, 2015 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm| Free
Etherton Gallery will host a panel discussion on prison reform in Arizona in conjunction with the exhibition, Danny Lyon: Conversations with the Dead, at 7pm, December 18, 2015. Arizona maintains one of the highest rates of incarceration in the United States. Although crime is down, the number of inmates has been increasing steadily and as of October 2015, numbers nearly 43,000. According to Mother Jones, three private prisons have 100% occupancy rates guaranteed in their contracts with the state of Arizona.
The discussion will address the ever-expanding prison population, reducing penalties for non-violent crime and the expansion of the private prison system in Arizona.
Moderated by Jim Nintzel, political reporter for the Tucson Weekly and host of television’s Zona Politics, panel members include: Arizona State Senator Steve Farley journalist Margaret Regan, author of Detained and Deported (2015); General Counsel, Arizona Senate Democratic Caucus, Lisette Flores; and Grace Gámez of the American Friends Service Committee.
We look forward to an informative discussion about prison and judicial sentencing reform against a backdrop of 80 compelling photographs documenting prison life by one of the 20th century’s most important visual artists.
