Event Navigation

The Presidio San Agustín del Tucson Museum is resuming its guided walking tours of the Turquoise Trail on Saturday, Oct. 21, from 10 am to 12:30 pm. The Turquoise Trail is a 2.5-mile walking tour of downtown Tucson that follows a turquoise line and leads walkers past many architectural and artistic gems important to Tucson’s history. It was created in 2006 by Marjorie Cunningham and Gayle Hartmann, knowledgeable historians and members of the Tucson Presidio Trust at the time,
A printed brochure, in its 10th edition, is available at many downtown locations and allows people to do this walk on their own. But the staff at the Presidio Museum felt it was time to elevate the experience by providing paid tours led by knowledgeable Museum docents. In fact, most of the tours will be led by Hartmann and Cunningham.
The tour begins at 10 am at the Presidio Museum at 196 N. Court Ave, and will pass by many important features of downtown, like the Jácome art panel at the Tucson Convention Center, El Tiradito/The Wishing Shrine, the Barrio Viejo neighborhood, the Blenman House (aka Royal Elizabeth Bed & Breakfast) and the former Carnegie Library, which houses the Tucson Children’s Museum. The tour ends at the Hotel Congress around 12:30 pm, and those wishing to have lunch at a downtown restaurant afterwards are welcome to do so at their own cost. The walking tour fee of $10 for Presidio Museum Members and $15 for non-members does not include lunch, but it does include all-day admission to the Presidio Museum.
Participants must be able to walk the 2.5-mile distance in approximately 2.5 hours. They are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen and bring water and snacks. The tour is not recommended for young children. Registration is available at www.TucsonPresidio.com, for tour dates through the end of the year. The tour is held on the third Saturday of each month: Oct. 21, Nov. 18, and Dec. 16 in 2017. Additional 2018 dates will be open for registration in December.
The Presidio San Agustín del Tucson Museum is located on the northeast corner of the original Presidio at 196 N. Court Ave. The Presidio Museum is a reconstruction of the original Tucson Presidio built in 1775. Docent tours give visitors a glimpse of what life in the Presidio was like for soldiers and other residents. Additional highlights include an original 150-year-old Sonoran row house and a 2,000-year-old prehistoric pit house. Living History Days are held on the second Saturday of the month from October through April to allow visitors to experience firsthand Tucson’s history. The Presidio Museum is managed by the Tucson Presidio Trust for Historic Preservation, a not-for-profit entity whose mission is to guide and aid in the interpretation of history at the Presidio San Agustín through research, education and living history experiences.
