| Free

Event Navigation

Underwater Photographer Samantha Schwann talks about the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Cocos Island, as part of her long-term project on oceanic Hope Spots. Hope Spots are ecologically unique areas of the ocean designated for protection under a global conservation campaign overseen by Mission Blue, founded by Dr. Sylvia Earle with her 2009 TED Prize Wish.

A tiny, uninhabited island located 334 miles off the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, Cocos Island is an important stopping ground for many large pelagic animals upon migratory routes, and guarded by a single ranger station. The location earned the nickname “Shark Island” for one of the largest schooling Hammerhead populations in the world, as well as Tiger, Silvertip, Blacktip, Galapagos, and White Tip sharks.
