Stephanie “Jo” Bowman: Sculptures on Display

December 1, 2016 - December 31, 2016

| Free

The sculptures of Stephanie “Jo” Bowman will be on display at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library during regular library hours in December.

Artist Statement: I sculpt to express my amazement at the wild and often bizarre variety of forms life takes and to communicate our hidden human connections to these often overlooked species. My natural role as a science educator joined with my deep concern for loss of biodiversity and empathy towards misunderstood and seemingly freaky things all inspire me to work. I choose to work small, creating objects that feel personal, perhaps even corporeal, and could be held in ones hands and manipulated. Above all, I wish to spark curiosity, compassion and change. In this series, “Life, contained”, I focus on species that were once common and important to humanity and ecosystems but are now at risk. It is important to me that each individual specimen be contained by something representative of our relationship to it and that each can be removed from its container.

An artist reception will be held on Saturday, December 10th from 3-5 p.m. in the Children’s Meeting Room.
