Event Navigation

The artwork of Ted Fleming will be on display at the Joel D. Valdez Main Library from February 1-28, 2019, on the wooden towers.

Artist Statement:

Because I’m a professional biologist, photographing wildlife is one of my main photographic interests. Having studied many kinds of animals, mostly birds and mammals, in many places in North America and abroad, I aim to capture images of them interacting with each other and with their food sources. Whenever possible, my goal is to capture the elegance and beauty of these animals in their natural settings. Birds, including many wading species as well as hummingbirds, typify the grace and beauty of Earth’s wildlife while the sheer power and drama of our large mammals convey another impressive aspect of this biodiversity. Finally, nectar-feeding bats, which have been one of my main research interests, represent a mysterious and totally fascinating aspect of Earth’s wildlife.

Given my interest in creating painterly images of my photographic subjects, all of these images represent digital paintings that I’ve created with software. Also, many are photo montages in which I’ve attempted to place each animal in its natural environment, again using software.
