Opening with a reception/book signing, 7-10pm, Sat. Sept. 8th, The Unguarded Moment features a selection of photographs made in Asia by Steve McCurry, best known for his portrait of Sharbat Gula, the famed Afghan Girl (1984). Also on display: Takeshi Ishikawa’s images of India’s hijra communities. The Hijra are officially recognized in India as  “third gender,” neither male nor female. Ishikawa was W. Eugene Smith’s assistant in Minamata, Japan in the early 1970s, and has been photographing hijras in India since the 1990s. McCurry and Ishikawa will attend the opening.

McCurry will also give a public talk at the Center for Creative Photography5:30pm, Friday, September 7.  The format will be a conversation with Director, Anne Breckenridge Barrett.
